Tooth Filling in Singapore

Tooth-Coloured Dental Fillings to Treat Tooth Decay

Tooth-coloured fillings are used to remove tooth decay and restore the affected tooth, while maintaining a natural-looking smile. Depending on the condition, size and position of the tooth, your dentist may use tooth coloured materials such as composite resin or glass ionomer cement (GIC). Composite fillings provide a tooth-coloured finish and are commonly used where aesthetics are important, while GIC may be suitable in certain situations based on the tooth and clinical needs.

At dePacific Dental Group, we provide tooth-coloured filling treatments for patients of all ages, with treatment tailored to the condition of each tooth. Regular dental check-ups can help detect decay early and prevent the need for more extensive treatment.

Do You Need a Tooth Filling? Signs of Tooth Decay

You may need a tooth filling if you notice signs of tooth decay or damage to a tooth. Common signs include:

  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
  • A visible hole, dark spot, or chip on the tooth
  • Pain when biting down
  • Food regularly getting trapped between teeth
  • A rough edge, or an old filling that has come loose or fallen out
  • Treating decay early tends to be simpler and helps protect the tooth. If decay is left untreated, it may deepen and extend into the inner layers of the tooth, eventually reaching the dental pulp. In those cases, root canal treatment may be needed to relieve pain and save the tooth.

Good daily habits also lower your risk. You can read our tips on how to prevent tooth decay for practical steps at home.

Types of Dental Fillings at dePacific Dental and Their Prices

A dental filling involves removing decay and replacing the lost tooth structure with a material that restores the tooth's integrity. Fillings may also be used to treat cracked or broken teeth.

At dePacific Dental, we place tooth-coloured composite fillings. Composite is a natural-looking material that bonds to the tooth, so the filling blends with your existing teeth. Where a patient has older amalgam (silver) fillings, these can often be replaced with tooth-coloured composite for a more natural appearance.

Tooth-coloured composite fillings are commonly used for:

  • Small to medium-sized restorations
  • Aesthetic closure of small or moderately sized gaps between adjacent teeth
  • Replacement of amalgam (silver) fillings
  • Veneers for discoloured teeth
  • Exposed surfaces of tooth roots
  • Tooth surfaces that do not bear a heavy chewing load
  • Temporary fillings for large cavities during multiple-visit procedures such as root canal treatment

Factors Affecting Tooth Filling Cost in Singapore

The cost of a dental filling in Singapore varies from case to case. Several factors affect what you pay for a tooth filling. The main ones include:

  • Size and number of surfaces filled. A larger cavity, or one that covers several surfaces of the tooth, generally takes more time and material.
  • Filling material. Different materials are priced differently. dePacific places tooth-coloured composite, and the amount used varies with the size and placement of the cavity, which affects the fee.
  • Tooth location. A filling on a front tooth can differ from one on a back molar, which handles more chewing force.
  • Subsidies applied. CHAS, Merdeka Generation, and Pioneer Generation subsidies can lower the amount you pay, depending on your eligibility.
  • Tooth Filling Procedure at dePacific Dental: What to Expect

At dePacific Dental, a tooth filling visit takes about 30-45 minutes, depending on the size and complexity of the filling.

    1. 1
      Step 1

Your dentist will begin by assessing the extent of damage to the tooth by conducting an oral examination.

    2. 2
      Step 2

Diagnostic imaging (X-ray) will be done to determine the location and depth of decay on the tooth.

    3. 3
      Step 3

Local anaesthesia may be given to numb the area and keep you comfortable while your dentist removes the decayed portion of the tooth.

    4. 4
      Step 4

Once all the decay has been removed, the tooth cavity will be prepared and cleaned.

    5. 5
      Step 5

The cleaned cavity will then be filled with restorative material before it is cured, shaped and polished.

    6. 6
      Step 6

Finally, your dentist will check your bite to ensure comfort when you chew and close your mouth.

After the appointment, any numbness from the local anaesthesia usually wears off within a few hours. It is generally best to wait until sensation returns before eating, so you do not accidentally bite your cheek or tongue. Fillings set fully during the visit, so you can eat once any numbness has passed, unless your dentist advises otherwise.

    Tooth Filling Subsidies

Several government schemes can lower the cost of a tooth filling, but not all of them apply. Here is how each works for fillings:

  • CHAS, Merdeka Generation, and Pioneer Generation cards: Fillings are subsidised at dePacific Dental for eligible cardholders. The Ministry of Health sets the maximum subsidy per filling by card tier. For a simple filling, the caps are $20 (CHAS Orange), $30 (CHAS Blue), $35 (Merdeka Generation), and $40 (Pioneer Generation). For a complex filling, the caps are $33.50 (CHAS Orange), $50 (CHAS Blue), $55 (Merdeka Generation), and $60 (Pioneer Generation). Up to six fillings per calendar year can be claimed, shared across all filling types. CHAS Green cardholders do not receive dental subsidies.
  • Medisave: Fillings are not Medisave-claimable. Medisave is reserved for surgical procedures such as wisdom tooth surgery and implant surgery, so it does not apply to routine fillings.
  • Baby Bonus CDA: The Child Development Account can be used towards children's dental treatment, including fillings. You can learn more on our Baby Bonus CDA dental benefits page.
  • For more detail on how these schemes work, see our guide to CHAS dental subsidies.

Aftercare: Sensitivity After a Filling and How Long Fillings Last

Mild sensitivity after a filling is common and usually settles within one to two weeks. If sensitivity lasts beyond two weeks, or your bite feels high or uneven, do give the clinic a call to check if the filling may require adjustment.

Consistent good oral hygiene habits such as regular brushing and flossing are necessary to maintain your fillings in the long term. Additionally, your dentist might recommend updated diagnostic imaging (X-ray) every two to three years to ensure recurrent decay has not developed under or around your fillings.

Filling, Crown or Root Canal: Which Treatment Do You Need?

The right treatment depends on how much of the tooth is affected.

  • A small cavity or minor damage is usually treated with a filling.
  • A larger loss of tooth structure may need a dental crown to protect and rebuild the tooth.
  • Decay that has reached the pulp usually needs root canal treatment, often followed by a crown.
  • Your dentist will assess the tooth and recommend the most suitable option for your case.

    Frequently Asked Questions About
    Tooth Fillings at dePacific Dental

How much does a tooth filling cost in Singapore?

A tooth filling at dePacific Dental starts from $95 to $300 before GST, depending on the size and location of the cavity. CHAS, Merdeka Generation, and Pioneer Generation subsidies can lower this for eligible patients.

Is getting a tooth filling painful?

A tooth filling is generally comfortable. Local anaesthesia may be used to numb the area, so you feel little more than mild pressure while the dentist works. Some sensitivity afterwards is normal and usually settles within a week or two.

How long does a tooth filling last?

A tooth-coloured composite filling often lasts around 5 to 10 years, though this varies from person to person. Longevity depends on factors such as oral hygiene, bite forces, and the size of the filling. Regular check-ups help your dentist monitor your fillings over time.

Can a cavity heal without a filling?

Once a cavity has formed a hole in the tooth, it does not heal on its own and usually needs a filling. Very early decay, before a hole develops, can sometimes be slowed with good oral hygiene and fluoride. Left untreated, decay can deepen and may eventually require more complex treatments such as root canal treatment.

Is it better to fill a tooth or remove it?

In most cases it is better to fill and keep a natural tooth than to remove it, as a filling preserves the tooth's structure and function. Extraction is usually considered only when a tooth is too damaged to restore. Your dentist will assess the tooth and advise on the most suitable option.

Can I get a tooth filling on the same day?

Yes, in most cases a filling is completed in a single visit.

How soon can I eat after a filling?

You can generally eat once any numbness from the local anaesthesia has worn off, which usually takes a few hours. A filling sets during the appointment, so there is no long waiting period, unless your dentist advises otherwise for your case.

    Can children get tooth fillings?

Yes, children can get tooth fillings, which are used to treat decay in baby teeth. Our dentists take a gentle approach to help children feel at ease, and Baby Bonus CDA funds can be used towards children's dental treatment. Learn more about our kids dental clinic in Singapore.

Can I use CHAS or Medisave for a tooth filling?

CHAS subsidies apply to tooth fillings for eligible cardholders, with the amount depending on your card tier and whether the filling is simple or complex. Medisave cannot be used for fillings, as it is reserved for surgical procedures. See our CHAS and Medisave page for details.

Should I replace my old silver (amalgam) fillings?

Old amalgam fillings do not always need replacing if they are intact and functioning. They can be replaced if they are cracked, worn, or leaking, or for aesthetic purposes. Your dentist can check your existing fillings and advise whether replacement is worthwhile.

What are the available payment methods at dePacific Dental?

We accept cash, PayNow, Nets, and all major credit cards, along with CHAS, Merdeka Generation, and Pioneer Generation subsidies for eligible treatments. Our team can talk you through what you are able to claim before treatment.
